Here’s Why You Don’t Need to Worry About Fillings Anymore!

Friday, November 4th, 2016

If you have a cavity, there’s no need to worry. We have extensive experience in fitting fillings, and we can restore your tooth without impacting on your beautiful smile. If you need a new filling, or you’re thinking about replacing an old filling, you’re in safe hands at Liverpool Implant & Aesthetic Dental Spa.

What exactly are fillings, and why would I need one?

Fillings are small restorations, which are used to seal and fill cavities. When the tooth enamel becomes weak, the tooth is vulnerable to harmful bacteria. These bacteria release powerful acids, which erode the enamel and cause holes, known as cavities, to develop. If cavities are left, there’s a risk of infection spreading through the tooth. You may also find that you experience dental pain and increased sensitivity. Fillings help to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria through the tooth and they also make the teeth stronger.

In the past, mercury amalgam was often used to fill teeth, especially the molars. Today, most people choose to have white fillings. White fillings are made from a combination of dental composite, resins and glass ionmers. They restore the teeth without impacting on its aesthetic. This means that you won’t be able to see the filling.

What’s so good about white fillings?

Most people prefer to have white fillings because they blend seamlessly with the rest of the tooth. This means that you can smile without worrying about showing off unsightly metal fillings. White fillings are also safer and more environmentally friendly. Although mercury fillings are still approved for use in the UK, there are safety concerns and these fillings have been banned in some countries. If you have amalgam fillings and you’d like to replace them with new white fillings, we will happily do this for you. All you need to do is give us a call and make an appointment.

White fillings don’t last forever, but they should last around five years if they are well cared for. We will check your fillings and any crowns or bridgework every time you have a routine check-up.

The Wonder of White Fillings

Monday, October 10th, 2016

White or tooth-coloured fillings fulfill all of the important functions of regular fillings, but with the added cosmetic advantage of blending in with the rest of your teeth to keep your smile looking bright and natural.

About white fillings

The fillings are virtually indistinguishable from regular teeth and do not blacken over time. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, white fillings are also safer than traditional silver amalgam fillings. This is due to the materials used in each method. White fillings are made from composite resin, a reliable material also implemented in other cosmetic dental procedures, such as tooth bonding and certain dental bridges. White fillings are also durable and stronger than traditional fillings.

Why not silver fillings?

The silver amalgam fillings that have often been used have raised concerns in recent times. The mercury within the silver fillings does not damage the mouth immediately, but there is a small risk of mercury leakage over time, which can spread in small amounts throughout the body. At the moment there is wide debate over the effects this produces and the wisdom of using mercury in dentistry. Older fillings are especially likely to contain mercury. Talk to your dentist for information about the substances used in making your fillings.

Replacing old fillings

Many people from Bristol hear about tooth coloured-fillings for the first time when they need treatment for a new cavity, and this can prompt them to ask their dentist to remove and replace their old silver fillings. Doing so leads to a more symmetrical and attractive smile, untarnished by flecks of metal. The procedure is simple and can often be performed in conjunction with the placing of a new white filling. Broken or cracked fillings can also be replaced.

How long do white fillings last for?

White fillings are very durable, lasting on average between 6 and 12 years. As always this depends on your individual oral hygiene. People who keep their teeth and mouth healthy can make their fillings last even longer.

The Brilliant Benefits of White Fillings

Monday, June 6th, 2016

White fillings are an aesthetically-pleasing and healthier option for filling tooth cavities, replacing traditional metal amalgam fillings. At Liverpool Dental Spa we recommend white fillings to our patients who need this treatment for the following reasons:

White fillings look and feel like natural teeth

White fillings may consist of porcelain ceramics or white dental composite, filling teeth cavities or cracks so that the difference between the filling and natural tooth is barely noticeable. Nowadays, white fillings are chosen because they are aesthetically fine and maintain a beautiful, natural-looking smile. The surfaces of fillings are made smooth and polished to look and feel good.

White filling material is safer for health and environment

The white porcelain ceramics or dental composite resin is a healthier and more environmentally-friendly option than amalgam fillings, which historically contained toxicity-producing mercury. White fillings are made through special processes for effective dental function and durability.

White fillings effectively restore teeth

Teeth that have cavities or are chipped or broken, may be filled with a white filling to strengthen tooth structure, preventing infection and tooth decay. White fillings may be used as tooth restorations for dental inlays, tooth caps and crowns. The type of white filling may differ depending on if the filling is in the front or back teeth.

Dental composite can be used to mask tooth discolouration

Stained and discoloured teeth may be masked with dental veneers made of dental composite or porcelain for beautiful white-looking teeth. Existing teeth may be whitened with teeth whitening but not dental restorations.

White fillings may be combined with other dental treatments

Some people have partial missing teeth and their own existing teeth. White fillings make teeth look natural and fit in well with other dental devices such as partial dentures and bridges. For more information on white filling treatment, please contact the team at Liverpool Dental Spa.

Discreet Fillings for Cavities in Liverpool

Friday, April 8th, 2016

At Liverpool Dental Spa we offer aesthetically pleasing white fillings for new or old cavities. We can fit new fillings or replace old metal amalgam fillings.

About white fillings

White fillings are used to strengthen the teeth when there is a cavity. Cavities weaken the tooth and there is a risk of further infection, which may eventually result in the need for more intensive treatment and the formation of dental abscesses.

White fillings are so-called because they are designed to blend with the natural whiteness of the teeth so that they are undetectable when you smile. They are made from composite, resin and porcelain. They strengthen the teeth without impacting on the aesthetic and this makes them a very popular choice for patients.

Filling procedure

It is very common to need a filling and the filling procedure is nothing to worry about. In most cases, treatment is complete within an hour and we use local anaesthetic to numb the affected tooth before we treat it.

Before a filling is placed, the tooth is prepared. This involves removing the decayed tissue from the cavity and then cleaning the hole. The cavity is lined with resin, which enables the composite to bond. The composite material is poured into the cavity and then your dentist will set it by shining a bright light on the composite. This does not take long and it is no painful. Once the composite has hardened, it is trimmed to fit and the procedure is then complete.

Benefits of a white filling

The major benefit of white fillings over metal fillings is that they look much nicer, however they are also more environmentally friendly and safer than metal fillings.

The Many Benefits of White Fillings

Friday, November 27th, 2015

Some things are best when they aren’t noticed and contribute to the whole without taking the spotlight. This can be quite literally true of lighting, of percussion in a music track or of make up: They contribute to an effect, one which their being recognised might shatter. White fillings follow this logic. Amalgam fillings, alas, do not. Both types of filling do prevent plaque from attacking the pulp housed in the tooth, but only one makes it look like you haven’t got a filling at all.

The trouble with those amalgam fillings

Sadly, metal amalgam fillings don’t just stand out from their pearly white brethren, they may also be marginally toxic. The amalgam used in producing these fillings contains mercury, a very toxic substance, and scientists do concur that the presence of mercury in such fillings may leak mercury into one’s mouth. Typically, the exact effect of mercury on the mouth is up for debate: Some scientists claim the small amount of mercury is enough to pose a health risk, other scientists do not.  If you’d prefer to bypass said debate entirely, you could, however, just opt for the white resin fillings…

A little too conspicuous

The dark tone of amalgam fillings is but a few shades removed from the very effects of decay they respond to. Yes, they protect your teeth from further damage, but they also serve as a souvenir of said erosion.  With white fillings, you’ll probably forget you ever had work done in the first place.

The importance of fillings

The erosion of your tooth enamel results from plaque acids and bacteria attacking your teeth. If the bacteria manages to make it to your inner tooth pulp, your tooth can become infected and may need to be removed. Brushing and flossing regularly is the best way to prevent this, but it is imperative that, if your enamel is bypassed, you get a filling. A filling will provide ample protection and will prevent you requiring further costly treatments (such as a root canal) or losing the tooth entirely.

The Advantages of White Fillings

Friday, November 20th, 2015

A filling is a restorative material that a dentist uses to return function to a decayed or otherwise broken tooth. These fillings come in all different types and colours, from flashy gold fillings to the more traditionally used amalgam fillings (containing silver, zinc, mercury  and copper). Despite having a long life advantage (up to 7 years), these have the great disadvantage of being noticeable.  This is where composite fillings have their advantages.

What are composite fillings?

A composite filling isn’t made up from an amalgam of metals and is rather made up from a mixture of both plastic and glass. They are known as ‘white fillings’ because they are tooth-coloured and blend into your smile perfectly in stark contrast to the fillings we mentioned earlier.

The advantages of white fillings

The main advantage to having white fillings is their chameleon-like ability to camouflage themselves in with the rest of the tooth and remain very much unnoticeable. This is because the dentist can blend shades until the composite resin is nearly identical.

With white fillings only a fraction of the healthy tooth has to be removed before applying the composite, whereas in applying other fillings, a large chunk of healthy tooth often has to be removed for the filling to fit.  Also the bonding can be done so effectively that your teeth are often stronger than they ever were before. You can also use the tooth immediately after the composite has been set, allowing your teeth to function as soon as the procedure has been completed.

Advantages and Disadvantages of White Fillings

Monday, August 24th, 2015

White fillings are becoming increasingly popular, but are they better than amalgam fillings and should you get your old fillings replaced with them?

The pros and cons of white fillings

White fillings are used to treat tooth decay. They are placed inside cavities (holes in the outer layer of the tooth) to stem the spread of infection and strengthen the tooth. White fillings are so called because they are made from a white material called dental composite, which is combined with resins. We are happy to fit new or replacement fillings and can remove old metal fillings and swap them for discreet white fillings. We also provide white fillings as part of a smile makeover for those planning a brand new look.

The advantages of white fillings

White fillings offer a number of advantages, including:

  • Natural looking aesthetics: white fillings protect the teeth without detracting from the natural tooth aesthetic. When the filling is in place, you won’t be able to notice it.
  • Safety: white fillings are made from safe materials that pose no risk to human health. Many people have concerns about using mercury in the body, which is why white fillings are often used in place of amalgam fillings.
  • Environmental friendliness: white fillings are more environmentally friendly than mercury amalgam fillings.
  • A simple treatment process: This procedure can be completed in just an hour.
  • Comfortable treatment: Your filling will be placed under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing.

The disadvantages of white fillings

The only real disadvantage of white fillings in comparison to mercury fillings is the strength of the filling. Metals are more hard-wearing and durable than white fillings. However, materials are advancing all the time and a white filling should last for around 5 years. Mercury fillings tend to last longer, with an average lifespan of 10-15 years.
