Oral Sex & Oral Cancer Link

Friday, March 25th, 2011

A new report shows that oral sex may be causing more throat cancer than tobacco.

Researchers studying HPV (human papillomavirus) say that it causes 64% of oropharynxl cancers in the US.

It is now thought to be the main cause of throat cancer in people under 50 years old.

Researchers at Ohio State University say the more oral sex someone has had, and the more partners they’ve had, the greater their risk of getting these cancers, which develop in the middle part of the throat.

Over the past five years, health officials have been urging parents to make sure their daughters are vaccinated against HPV to help prevent cervical cancer.

But these new results suggest that young men could also benefit from vaccination because the recent rise in oropharynxl cancer is predominantly among young, white men.

The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) has been calling on the government to include boys in its vaccination programs – designed to guard against the sexually transmitted HPV virus – for years.

Come in to The Liverpool Dental Spa and get a free oral cancer screening with your dental examination.

Dental Implant Success

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Using a bone-creating protein to augment the maxillary sinus could improve dental implant success.

That’s according to experts at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Dental implants won’t work if the bone in which they are anchored is too thin and bone thinning is a common cause and consequence following tooth loss.

The current favoured solution is to supplement the area with bone grafts to stabilise the implant base.

At the Liverpool Dental Spa we measure bone volume specifically to utilize the latest research and techniques to make sure our implant treatment looks as simple as possible but also effective for long term care.

Older women need more dental check ups

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

After a recent study by the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine showing the comparisons between woman who are on and off  therapies for osteoporosis, it is understood that women should increase the number of times they have a dental check up in a year once they’ve undergone the menopause.

The woman who took part in the study were aged between 51 and 80. They all received cone beam CT scans of their jaws and had a complete periodontal check for bleeding of the gums and loss of bone attachment around the teeth

Researches did find that there was a increased level of plaque (which causes gum disease) for both of the groups. Menopausal women at risk for osteoporosis also are at risk for periodontal disease, which affects bone that anchors teeth.

These results would suggest that women may need to see the dentist as many as four times a year to control dental plaque by periodontal cleanings.

Here at the Liverpool Dental Spa we have packages specifically tailored for people who need to see the dentist or therapist more often than most

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns over this paper or wish to find out more.

Patient Testimonial

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone at the Liverpool Dental Spa. My treatment has been fantastic. I have been made to feel at ease and have become very trusting of the people treating me.

I was very nervous at the beginning of my treatment having come to a new dentist, but all the staff were so easy to talk to about everything.

I love my new smile,

Thank you

Miriam Cotton
