Don’t Let Jaw Joint Problems Destroy Your Joy This Christmas

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

At Christmas time, you want to enjoy a few days off, sample some festive delicacies and spend time with your favourite people. You don’t want to worry about jaw joint pain. If you regularly wake up with jaw pain, headaches or toothache, now is the time to call us so we can help you banish TMJ troubles for good.

About TMJ disorder

TMJ disorder is a group of symptoms that affects the temporomandibular joint. This joint is one of the busiest joints in the body and you can feel it working if you place your fingers on the side of the face by the ears and open and close your mouth. Symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

  • clicking and popping noises when you move your jaw
  • jaw pain
  • stiffness
  • headaches and neck and shoulder pain
  • restricted movement in the jaw

Possible causes of TMJ disorder include:

  • tooth grinding
  • clenching the jaw
  • underlying health conditions (such as arthritis)

How we can help

Many cases of TMJ disorder are linked to tooth grinding, also known as bruxism. Tooth grinding can be brought on by stress and anxiety or linked to orthodontic issues and loose crowns or fillings. If you grind your teeth, we can try to determine and address the cause. This may involve repairing loose restorations, fitting braces or creating a custom-made bite guard. A bite guard is a device placed inside the mouth to prevent contact between the upper and lower arches of teeth while you sleep. We can also recommend stress management techniques.

Treating Jaw Joint Pain In The Heart Of Liverpool

Wednesday, January 1st, 2014

Use degrades: If something is in continual operation, it will wear down. At a dentist’s practice, you will often hear about how this issue affects teeth, but, likewise, your jaw can also suffer the pains of continual repetition. Thankfully, at Liverpool Dental Spa, we are equipped both to deal with, and help indentify, jaw joint problems.

Key indicators of jaw joint issues

Does your jaw often click? Does it regularly ache? Well, these are the bluntest indicators of jaw problems. Sometimes, however, jaw problems can occur as the result of a bacterial infection, often as the result of poor dental hygiene. TMD, or ‘Temporomandibular disorder’ if you want to sound smart, is a chronic jaw problem and it is estimated that 20% of the population are affected by it, yet it only 10% or 20% of those affected with the problem will go and seek help! Many other major problems often include jaw pain as a symptom, so being checked out is incredibly important as it might indicate something beyond discomfort! Jaw pain, if not dealt with, can lead to more serious jaw problems as well.

Treatments

There are a variety of treatments available to combat jaw pain. Thankfully, most of these are non-surgical and surgical treatment is, in itself, only recommended in extreme cases. Some basic treatments include performing small, regular jaw exercise or altering your diet: avoiding harsh, crunchy foods and cutting your foods in to more manageable chunks can help prevent jaw pain. Slight changes in general posture and habit can also make a difference: Avoiding extreme jaw movements and trying not rest your jaw in your hand can help. If physical therapy and dietary changes don’t produce the desired results, medication can also be used to relieve swelling and muscle pain. If needed, surgical options are also available.

Treating The Cause Of Headaches And Migraines In The Heart Of Liverpool

Thursday, August 29th, 2013

Headaches are very common and in most cases they come and go without any real problem; however, if you suffer from severe headaches or migraines or you have headaches on a regular basis, this can be very debilitating.

What causes headaches?

There are many possible causes of headaches, from dehydration and vision problems, to teeth grinding and TMJ disorder and stress. At Liverpool Dental Spa we understand how headaches and migraines can impact day to day life and we explore different treatments and therapies to help patients to live a more comfortable life.

What can be done for headaches and migraines?

Over the years we have found that dental treatment can be very effective for headaches and migraines. We offer pain management consultations for patients, which enable us to discuss symptoms and possible cause and determine whether there are treatments that could be of benefit. In some cases, headaches and migraines are linked to TMJ disorder, which affects the temporomandibular joint, which joins the skull to the jaw.

TMJ disorder is a term used to describe symptoms including pain in the jaw, headaches, restricted movement in and around the jaw and clicking and popping noises when you move your jaw. TMJ disorder is often associated with teeth grinding, which is known as bruxism; many people grind their teeth during the night subconsciously and this can result in headaches, worn biting surfaces and chipped teeth.

One solution we can suggest for teeth grinding is a nigh guard, which is a custom-made appliance, which helps to prevent tooth to tooth contact during the night.

If you suffer from headaches and migraines and painkillers are doing the trick, give us a call today  at Liverpool Dental Spa and find out if we could help to make your life pain-free.

The Link Between Headaches And Dental Pain For Patients In Liverpool

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013

Dental pain may trigger mild to severe headaches including migraine. We may experience dental pain due to:

  • Tooth infection
  • Damaged teeth
  • Teeth grinding
  • Temporo-mandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

Tooth infection

Poor oral hygiene and dental trauma may lead to tooth infection, dental abscess and gum disease. Some people may be prone to tooth infections due to other causes, including health conditions. When infection sets into the inner dental pulp of the tooth, headaches and facial pain may be experienced. Root canal treatment eliminates infection from tooth root canals so that a damaged tooth may be restored with a dental crown.

Damaged teeth

Damaged teeth may cause pain and headaches. Unsafe teeth whitening may cause tooth sensitivity, weaken tooth structure and lead to tooth fractures resulting in painful headaches. Damaged teeth that are left untreated may lead to an abscess or bite disorder. Seeing a dentist to restore a damaged tooth is important to prevent oral and overall health deterioration.

Teeth grinding

Teeth grinding habits are known to cause facial pain and headaches. Teeth may become ground down too and become vulnerable to breakage and infection. People who grind teeth during sleep or when anxious during the day may develop a bite disorder that triggers migraine.

Temporo-mandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

TMJ is a jaw joint disorder that may be very painful, causing migraine, neck and back pain. Some people are born with TMJ disorders due to developmental irregularities or genetics. Others may develop TMJ due to injury, malocclusion or bruxism teeth grinding habits.

At Liverpool Dental Spa in the heart of Liverpool we diagnose dental disorders that may be causing painful migraines. We offer treatment solutions including white fillings, root canal treatment, porcelain crowns and orthodontics. Headaches And Migraines And Their Link To Teeth Issues For Patients In Liverpool

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

The cause of headaches and migraines is not fully understood as there are a variety of factors that have been linked to this problem. This throws a spanner in the works when it comes to treating head pain and means that we have to suffer along by using management strategies. When a headache or migraine hits there’s not much you can do but lie in a dark room with painkillers and ride out the storm.

If you can, its best to try and narrow down the stimuli that might be causing the pain. Some people find that eating certain things such as chocolate can bring on migraines or it could be related to your oral health. Many people fail to realize that pain in their head could actually be associated with your teeth but once you make the link, there could be some truth behind it.

One common jaw problem is tempero-mandibular jaw pain. If you grind your teeth or the muscles of your jaw spasm, this can send shooting pain up to your head and bring about migraines. Tooth infections can also cause headaches as it can affect the nerves that run from your teeth to your brain. Abscesses are also particularly nasty and may contribute to those headaches you are feeling.  Any kind of trauma to your mouth may also result in head pain or if your teeth are misaligned, your bite will be wrong and will cause tension that can lead to headaches.

What treatments are available?

If you think your headaches may be attributable to teeth problems, head straight to your dentist. If the problems are indeed caused from abscesses or infections, action can be taken such as antibiotics or removal of the tooth in question to relieve you of those bad heads. If you suffer from tempero mandibular pain, you will benefit from a retainer. This prevents you from exerting so much force through your jaw and can help relax the muscle so that you experience fewer headaches. Realignment of the teeth through a brace system should deal with any headache problems so visiting the dentist may be the ideal solution to your migraine problems.
