Let Liverpool Dentists Restore Your Smile this Winter

Monday, November 24th, 2014

If your smile is in need of some restorative work this winter, we are here to patch up the teeth and restore your smile to its former glory. We offer a comprehensive range of restorative and tooth replacement treatments, from crowns and fillings to bridges, dentures and dental implants.

Fillings

Fillings are used when a tooth has a cavity. The cavity is filled to make the tooth stronger and more robust. White fillings offer natural looking aesthetics and provide a safer alternative to mercury amalgam fillings. Treatment to fill a tooth usually takes around an hour.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are a commonly used restorative treatment, which is used when a tooth is damaged or decayed. Crowns are positioned over the top of the tooth and they help to protect and restore the tooth. There are different materials that can be used to make a crown and we often recommend porcelain, as it provides a natural looking finish. Crown treatment usually takes 2 sessions and a crown should last for around 10 years. When a tooth is damaged, but not extensively, an inlay or onlay may be recommended. These restorative treatments are often referred to as a mid-point between fillings and crowns.

Tooth replacement: dental bridges, dentures and implants

Dental bridges, dentures and dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. Most commonly, bridges are used to replace a single tooth, while dentures are used to replace a number of missing teeth. Implants are a versatile treatment, which can provide an option for patients with any number of lost teeth. Implants are a long-term solution, that offers amazing aesthetics and optimum functionality, while dentures and bridges involve a quick and simple treatment process and natural looking results.

Wonderful White Fillings in the Heart of Liverpool

Thursday, August 14th, 2014

Nothing makes you look and feel better than a bright white smile, and we are delighted to provide white fillings to restore decayed teeth with minimal impact to your beautiful smile. Whether you would like to replace existing metal fillings, or you need a new filling, we can help!

About white fillings

White fillings are very popular now because they look much better than amalgam fillings, which can easily be seen when you smile or open your mouth. White fillings are created from dental composite, which contains resins, and is available in a range of white shades. We use the closest shade to your natural tooth colour to ensure that it is impossible to tell the difference between the filling and the rest of the tooth.

Fillings are commonly used to treat cavities (holes that form in the tooth surface). This helps to prevent the spread of infection through the tooth and also strengthens the tooth to protect it from injury in the future.

What are the benefits of white fillings over amalgam fillings?

White fillings have obvious aesthetic benefits, as they don’t affect the look of your smile, but they are also environmentally friendly and safe. Modern materials are more durable than ever and most teeth can now be filled with dental composite.

The procedure

The filling procedure is simple, quick and painless. Before the filling is placed, we will numb the tooth to prevent you from feeling pain and we will then clean the cavity and clear it of decayed tissue. Once bonding material has been placed in the cavity, we will then insert the composite and mould it (at this stage the composite is in putty form) to fill the cavity and then set it to harden it using a curing light. Once the filling is hard, any final adjustments will be made and then you’ll be free to go home.

What Are The Benefits Of White Fillings For Patients In Liverpool?

The problem with amalgam fillings

Metal amalgam fillings are not just highly noticeable; they can also be mildly toxic. The amalgam used contains mercury, a highly toxic material, and scientists agree that the presence of mercury in these fillings will leach mercury into the mouth. The precise impact of the mercury on the mouth, however, is debatable, with scientists coming to opposing conclusion as to whether the small amount of mercury used in these fillings presents a health risk. Regardless, you can bypass this entire debate by simply opting for a white resin filling!

Standing out from the crowd

The aesthetic problem with amalgam fillings is that they resemble the very decay which they are trying to cover up. They may prevent further plaque acids from entering the tooth, but they serve as a reminder that such erosion occurred in the first place. White fillings, however, blend in far more subtly whilst serving the same protective role.

The importance of fillings

Dental decay occurs as the result of plaque acids and bacteria eating away at your tooth enamel. The prevention of this, via regular brushing and flossing, is obviously the most effect tooth protection treatment. If, however, your enamel is breached, then urgently getting a filling is imperative as, once your tooth’s inner pulp is exposed and infected, it is effectively dying. Dental fillings are important as they prevent you from either losing your tooth entirely or resorting to root canal treatment.

Patients In Liverpool Learn About White Fillings And Amalgam Fillings

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Traditionally metal amalgam fillings were used to restore decayed teeth. However these could be easily spotted in the mouth and give an unpleasant look to the mouth area. Also, amalgam fillings were found to create dental toxicity which caused some unexplained symptoms and diseases. When it comes to white fillings the teeth stay protected without the need to be exposed to mercury toxicity. It also helps retain the healthy and natural looking smile.

When acids from plaque and bacteria successfully remove the enamel from the surface of the teeth and moves into the dentin material of the tooth, the tooth begins to decay. Once the bacterium passes the dentin, it will enter the dental chamber and attack the pulp. Once the dental pulp gets infected the tooth becomes technically dead and the patient would require a root canal treatment.  However with the help of white fillings the teeth can be sealed to avoid damage.

Advantage and Disadvantage

While amalgam fillings are strong and can easily withstand the pressure from chewing, they do not bond with the tooth as well as the white fillings do.  Because white fillings bond well with the tooth, they add to the strength of the tooth as well. Once white fillings are put in place they will be cured with heat to stay strong.

In comparison to Amalgam fillings, White fillings require less drilling, as the dentist will not really need to shape the teeth to hold the filling. This allows the dentist to save a lot more of the healthy teeth.

White fillings are great especially when it comes to the aesthetics. They blend very well with the colour of the teeth and therefore avoid undesired attention to the mouth area. Many people who opt for amalgam filling tend to restrain their smile to hide the fillings. This behaviour can easily affect their self-esteem negatively and cause long term problems.
