Treating Broken Teeth For Patients In The Heart Of Liverpool

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

The type of treatment provided for a broken tooth may depend on the severity of the tooth fracture or break. The location of the tooth may impact the treatment choice too, and whether or not the tooth may be saved.

Broken tooth treatment options

At Liverpool Dental Spa we offer individuals assessment to determine the extent of a broken tooth and the best possible treatment. When a front tooth is broken, the type of tooth restoration matters as it affects the look of our smiles. Broken teeth treatments include:

  • White fillings
  • Composite bonding
  • Dental veneers
  • Inlays or onlays
  • Dental crowns

Restoring front teeth

Front teeth may be restored with white filling or dental composite, or may require a porcelain veneer to improve the tooth’s appearance. Dentists prepare the broken tooth for dental composite bonding or bonding of dental veneers through etching technique. By slightly roughening the tooth surface, the dental composite or veneer securely bonds to the tooth surface for added strength. Once sculpted in place and polished, the tooth restoration looks just like a natural tooth.

Restoring back teeth or molars

Teeth at the back of the mouth that are used more for chewing may require a stronger type of dental restoration such as a cap or dental crown made of gold, zirconium or ceramic porcelain. Cavities once restored with amalgam fillings may be restored with white porcelain fillings as a safer mercury-free option.

Molars are particularly prone to tooth decay due to their location and difficulty to reach when cleaning. Regular dental check-ups and professional teeth cleaning, scaling and polishing may help to prevent cavities.

Fissure sealant may be applied to the tooth surface so that plaque and bacteria is less likely to adhere to the tooth grooves. Get in touch with us today for information about treating broken teeth.

Restorative Treatments For Patients In The City Of Liverpool

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Teeth easily become damaged and need to be restored with dental treatments to prevent oral infections, tooth decay and gum disease. There are many factors that contribute to teeth becoming damaged, including the effects of ageing.

Damaged teeth

Poor oral hygiene may lead to acidic bacterial build-up in saliva that erodes dental enamel, breaking down the tooth’s structure. Eating excessively sugary and acidic foods may have a similar effect.

Habits that weaken tooth makeup include incorrect teeth brushing technique, teeth grinding and smoking. Changing our habits may improve the condition of our teeth and gums.

Oral injuries from sport, accidents or assaults may also lead to damaged teeth that need treatment to prevent further oral trauma and illness. Wearing a mouth guard during sport may protect teeth from damage.

Restoring damaged teeth

At Liverpool Dental Spa in Liverpool we offer individuals choices in tooth restorations ranging from white fillings, inlays, onlays and crowns to dental bridges and implants.

Our porcelain crowns are particularly popular for restoring teeth following root canal treatment to remove infection, or to strengthen tooth structure. Teeth may chip, fracture or break causing further damage to gum tissue and bite function.

Having teeth restored with a dental crown, whether made of porcelain, gold or zirconium ensures that the existing tooth enamel is preserved and the inner tooth dentition protected from infection-causing bacteria. Damaged teeth, if left untreated, may lead to gum disease and tooth loss.

Access porcelain crown treatment

Get in touch with us to learn more about porcelain crowns and how they enhance the quality of our teeth. Within two appointments you may receive porcelain crowns made from the finest ceramics that mimic tooth shade and texture, making it hard to distinguish between existing teeth and those restored with a dental crown.

Denture Treatment For Missing Teeth For Patients In Liverpool

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Retro is certainly in at present, and you can’t get more retro in dentistry than dentures: Their usage can be traced all the way back to 700BC. Those early dentures were mostly made from animal teeth, with models in later centuries also being constructed from wood. Thankfully, the dentures we offer at Liverpool Dental Spa aren’t quite that retro… Just as vintage designs can be reproduced with all the benefits of modern technology – one need think merely of the laser turntable – so an ancient dental concept can be updated to suit one’s modern needs.

What are dentures exactly?

Dentures are essentially a way of replacing missing teeth. The can be constructed so as to stand in for a full set of teeth (a full denture), or just to fill in for a few missing ones (a partial denture). Modern dentures are made from an acrylic resin which is then affixed to metal. Partial dentures are fantastic at preventing your healthy teeth from moving about, and both full and partial dentures are great at fighting the infamous issues of speech and eating which are associated with missing teeth.

Having your dentures fitted

The process of having dentures fitted will take, on average, a month and you will most likely need to have 5 appointments with your dentist during this procedure. An impression of your mouth will be produced and this will then be used as a basis for your dentures. You will also be given a ‘trial denture’, just to ensure that you are happy with the look and feel of dentures generally. If any other work (such as tooth extraction) is required before having your dentures fitted, you will typically wait two months post-surgery before your dentures will be fitted; this allows your gums to heal. Following the dentures being fitted, you might find them a little odd to use. Don’t fret! This perfectly is normal. It is best to only eat soft foods and drink for a while after you denture has been fitted.

Are dentures okay to wear at night?

It is best, when you are going to sleep, to take them out as it lets your gums rest.

Oral Surgery Explained For Patients In Liverpool

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

There are a number of reasons why teeth may need to be taken out. You may have an overcrowded mouth, so removing one of them will give the others some breathing space or your wisdom teeth may be causing problems. Sometimes, you may have a tooth that is causing more harm than good because it is the source of decay and this will need to be removed too. Unfortunately, the procedure may not the most comfortable thing in the world, but after you are given a local anaesthetic, you shouldn’t feel a thing.

Tooth extraction

Anaesthetic is given to the area to numb the nerves so that you won’t feel any pain. The dentist will then cut away at the gum to clear the area around the tooth so forceps can be used to wriggle the tooth out from its roots. Once its removed, stitches may be needed and once a dressing is applied, you’re all set to go home. Although it’s not the most pleasant experience, techniques and anaesthetics make the process much more bearable.

Aftercare

After the extraction, there is no doubt that the area will be a little painful. You can take painkillers to help ease the pain but it is important that nothing touches the area. You shouldn’t eat hot food for 24 hours and avoid hot drinks also as they can aggravate the area. Blood clots usually form over the wound and it is important that you do not attempt to remove these, as you will reopen the wound, which will be more painful in the long run. As tempting as it is to play with the newly formed hole with your tongue, it’s best to refrain from touching the area for the first 24 hours, as it will be very tender. Also, don’t rinse the area for a day and then in order to clean it, use warm salty water. Keep your mouth as clean as normal and your gums should heal in a few days. For more information on tooth extraction please contact the team at Liverpool Dental Spa in the city of Liverpool.

CEREC Restorations In Just One Day

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

If you’ve ever broken, chipped or knocked any of your teeth out, you know the bother that goes into getting it repaired. Firstly, you have to visit the dentist and then book a few more appointments so your teeth can be measured and treatment carried out. It can take as many as four or five treatments alone before you can start showing off your new smile.  However, a new technology has crashed into the dental word- CEREC technology allows you to get all the treatment you need in a day.

CEREC can fix your teeth in just one day

CEREC is a new form of 3D imaging that can be used in dental clinics. The time consuming part of having new dentures or veneer treatment is that impressions have to be sent away to technologists who make the prosthetics outside of your dental clinic. However, CEREC allows all this to happen in your own clinic so therefore no time is wasted sending things away.

There’s also no need for impressions as a high clarity photo is taken of your mouth and this is converted to a 3D image. Your dentist can then design a tooth/veneer/crown and once happy, the system will carve your new prosthetic out of a ceramic block that has been chosen to accurately match your natural tooth colour within half an hour. Therefore, you can have a new tooth designed, made and fitted in a matter of hours rather than days.

Benefits of CEREC technology

By combining the stages involved in treatments, CEREC allows you to have your treatment all in one day rather than spread over a few weeks. This saves both you and the dentist time and means that you’ll only have to have any injections once. Also, here at Liverpool Dental Spa we can control exactly what your tooth will look like once treated, so there’s no room for errors from outside technologists. Therefore, CEREC technology offers you a permanent, accurate solution to your tooth woes in just one day.

Dealing With Broken Teeth At Liverpool Dental Spa

Monday, April 1st, 2013

Teeth go through a lot of strain throughout your lifetime. At some stage, you’re going to end up with imperfections from sporting incidents, accidents or simply biting down on hard foods. Whether that may be chips or cracks, broken teeth are always a hassle. So what’s next? You walk around covering your smile with your hand for the rest of your life? Or you find out about new innovative techniques that can fix your broken teeth in a matter of treatments.

In some cases, you may need dental veneers, which are like fake nails for your teeth or dental implants if the tooth is beyond repair. However, if not, composite bonding may be able to fix the problem. This tooth coloured bonding substance is used almost like a filler to fill in any cracks or replace missing parts to your tooth.

Composite bonding treatment

At Liverpool Dental Spa in the heart of Liverpool, the tooth is assessed for damage so that we can get a good idea of what we are dealing with. Following this, dental bonding is applied to the tooth to fill in any cracks or chips. This is then polished with dentistry equipment to make sure that all the gaps are filled in and the surface is as smooth as possible.  Pretty much any crack, chip or dent can be fixed in this manner so the majority of minor dental cases benefit from this hassle-free procedure.

A huge advantage of composite bonding is that its matches the natural colour of your tooth so once the treatment is complete, you won’t even be able to tell there was a problem in the first place. Although they may not last as long as porcelain veneers, composite bonding offers a pain free treatment that gives you quick results and fixes any imperfections in your smile.

Innovative Treatment For Missing Teeth For Patients In Liverpool

Monday, March 4th, 2013

From the ironic revival of classic rock, to retro Polaroid Smartphone filters and bomber jackets, it seems that nostalgia has been a guiding influence on popular trends of late. One area, however, where nostalgia should be left at the door, is dentistry. For centuries, the only option for replacing missing teeth were dentures, dentures made either from wood or, if we go back far enough, animal bone. Thankfully, in the modern world, we don’t have to worry about splinters or animal rights to quite the same extent when it comes to tooth replacements. In fact, we don’t even have to use dentures! Let us introduce you to ‘the fixed bridge’!

What is a dental Bridge?

Much as a bridge spans a gap in land, so a dental bridge spans the gap in your teeth. The bridge then supports a fake tooth.

Why should I replace a tooth?

Appearance is one reason, but not replacing a tooth can also increase the risk of gum disease, alter the structure of your face and affect the way you speak and eat.

The advantages of a bridge

Well, they certainly avoid the problems with eating, speaking and continuing slippage which are attributed to dentures. Bridges look natural, can last (with care) for well over a decade and can combat the problems most commonly associated with a missing tooth.

Bridge variants

As with transport bridges, there are several types; the traditional fixed bridge is the most common type as it is the most versatile. It is anchored via crowns on the two surrounding, healthy teeth and will require the surrounding teeth to be shaved slightly. The Cantilever bridge operates like a fixed bridge, except it is only anchored to one tooth. This has less of an impact on healthy teeth, but also allows a bridge to be fitted if you only have healthy tooth nearby. Being attached only to one side, however, limits the bridge’s use to areas of the mouth which are under less stress. The Maryland Bridge uses metal bands, rather than crowns, and so has no negative impact on surrounding teeth. This does, however, limit its use mostly to the front teeth and other low stress areas. For more information on bridge options, please contact the team at Liverpool Dental Spa in the city of Liverpool.

How To Deal With Broken Teeth For Patients In Liverpool

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

Broken teeth are a risk to oral and overall health. Teeth may break, become worn or damage from:

  • Daily oral activities such as eating
  • Bad habits such as using the teeth as a tool to bite things open
  • Teeth grinding during the day or in sleep
  • Erosion by acid or sugary foods and oral bacteria
  • Injury such as in contact sports or accidents

Leaving broken teeth untreated may damage neighbouring teeth and how teeth bite together. Broken teeth may lead to occlusion problems requiring more extensive treatment. Bacteria may enter the inner tooth dentin and dental pulp causing root canal infection. Gum disease may set in and lead to tooth and bone loss. For these reasons, it is important to have broken teeth restored.

At Liverpool Dental Spa we offer patients a range of choices for restoring broken teeth to prevent further oral trauma, infection and tooth loss. We have invested in CEREC technology to provide treatments such as porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays and onlays.

CEREC veneers

CEREC veneers are ideal for masking worn and discoloured teeth while protecting the outer tooth surface. Damaged tooth cusps may be restored with CEREC crowns or onlays. Inlays may be used to fill deep tooth cavities.

We use tooth-coloured dental composite and porcelain to fill tooth chips and cracks, blending the dental material with the natural tooth structure for greater strength. Once the fillings are in place, there difference between the existing tooth and restoration is not obvious. Tooth quality is enhanced and looks just like natural, healthy teeth.

Where teeth are broken and cannot be saved, dental implant-supported crowns may be used to replace missing teeth. Broken and missing teeth may detract from facial expression. Our CEREC and Dental Spa restorations in central Liverpool make all the difference, transforming smiles and emphasizing natural beauty.

The Crowning Success of Restorative Dentistry For Patients In Liverpool

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Dental crowns are designed to fit over a tooth or a series of teeth to protect and strengthen the tooth layers. This sometimes follows procedures such as root canal treatment where needed. Crowns are available in a selection of of materials which include ceramic, gold and porcelain. They are custom-made using dental impressions and fitted to an individual’s teeth during a quick procedure.

Restore functionality

The purpose is to restore functionality to an otherwise compromised tooth, after which you can resume eating as you have done in the past without fear of damaging your teeth. Crowns help to strengthen a damaged tooth and repair it to its former state.

If you are undergoing a root canal the crown will be cast from a set of impressions and fitted onto your tooth after the procedure is successfully completed. When carried out properly no one will be able to notice that you are wearing a crown. It should not affect your speech and you can retain complete functionality of your tooth in just a few days.

Over time, your crown may begin to wear from day-to-day use and require repairing. They also generally need to be replaced if discoloured occurs or where wear is present. Crown replacement treatment is as easy as having one fitted and only requires a quick and easy non-invasive procedure. This can be discussed with your dentist in due time, but with proper care the restorative device should last for a good amount of time. If you would like more information on crowns and restorative dentistry we offer please contact the Liverpool Dental Spa in the very heart of Liverpool.
